This study aims to examine audit committee characteristics and investment efficiency. Also, the moderating role of opportunistic related party transactions (RPTs) has been examined. As a methodological aspect, this study is an applied and descriptive correlation research. Our sample includes 105 companies listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange in the years 2018 to 2023. A multivariate regression method based on panel data was used to test the research hypothesis. Eviews software was used for data analysis. The results show that audit committee characteristics includes independence, financial expertise, activity, gender and size positively and significantly affect investment efficiency. Also, opportunistic RPTs negatively moderate the relationship between committee independence and investment efficiency; positively moderates the relationship between committee gender and investment efficiency, and has no significant moderating effect on the relationship between committee financial expertise, activity, size and investment efficiency. The research results emphasize the importance of audit committee characteristics in improving investment efficiency; they also suggest the need to pay attention to the type of RPTs, specifically opportunistic RPTs. Such a new attitude to the type of RPTs in the country's capital market is innovative and helps to develop the literature in this field.
